NDA age limit explained

UPSC does not use a simple “minimum and maximum age” for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy exam. Instead, every notification gives a fixed date-of-birth window, which works out to 16½ to 19½ years of age when the course starts. The NDA (I) course starts the following January and the NDA (II) course the following July, which gives this pattern:

For example, the NDA & NA (I) 2026 notification allowed candidates born between 1 July 2007 and 1 July 2010, and NDA (II) 2026 allowed those born between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2011 (both dates included). This calculator applies the same rule to each upcoming exam, so you can see how many attempts you have left.

Frequently Asked Questions

You must be 16½ to 19½ years old when the course starts. For NDA (I) of a given year that means being born between 1 July nineteen years earlier and 1 July sixteen years earlier; for NDA (II), between 1 January eighteen years earlier and 1 January fifteen years earlier.

There is no fixed limit on the number of attempts. You can appear in every NDA exam for which your date of birth falls inside the window, which usually gives 5–6 attempts in total.

Yes. Since 2021, unmarried female candidates can apply for NDA with the same age limits as male candidates.

UPSC only accepts the date of birth recorded in the Matriculation / Secondary School Leaving Certificate (10th class) or an equivalent certificate. Later requests to change it are not accepted.

Yes. Candidates appearing in the 12th class exam can apply, but they must submit proof of passing by the date set in the notification.

This tool follows the age rule in the 2026 UPSC NDA & NA notifications. Some older notices started the window on the 2nd of the month instead of the 1st, so if your birthday is right on a boundary, confirm it in the official notification on upsc.gov.in before applying.
