How is BMI calculated for men?

Body Mass Index is your weight divided by the square of your height. The formula is the same for men and women:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²

For example, a man who is 175 cm tall and weighs 80 kg has a BMI of 80 ÷ 1.75² = 26.1, which is in the overweight range on the WHO scale.

Limits of BMI for men

BMI does not tell muscle from fat. Muscular men and athletes often score as “overweight” while having little body fat, and older men can have a normal BMI with too little muscle. Waist size is a useful second check: a waist above 94 cm (37 in) — or 90 cm (35.5 in) for South Asian men — indicates higher health risk.

On the WHO scale a healthy BMI for adult men is 18.5 to 24.9. For men of South Asian, Chinese or other Asian descent, health bodies such as WHO and NICE recommend a healthy range of 18.5 to 22.9.

The BMI formula and adult categories are the same for both. Men usually carry more muscle at the same BMI, which is why the body fat estimate on this page uses a male-specific formula.

The adult BMI categories do not change with age from 18 upward. Age does change body composition, so the body fat estimate on this page takes your age into account. For boys under 18, BMI-for-age percentile charts are used instead.

It uses the Deurenberg formula (1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age − 16.2), which is a population-level estimate. It can be off by several percentage points for individuals, especially very muscular men.

BMI Prime is your BMI divided by the upper limit of the healthy range (25 on the WHO scale, 23 on the Asian scale). A value above 1.0 means you are above the healthy range; on the WHO scale, 0.74 to 1.0 is healthy.
