    How to do long division
    
                    
    
                        Long division breaks a big division into small steps you can do in your head. Work from left to
                        right through the digits of the dividend and repeat four steps — often remembered as
                        Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down:
                    
    
                    
      
                        
    1. Divide: how many times does the divisor go into the current number? Write that digit on top.
      2. 
                        
    2. Multiply: multiply that digit by the divisor and write the result underneath.
      3. 
                        
    3. Subtract: subtract to find what is left over.
      4. 
                        
    4. Bring down: bring down the next digit of the dividend next to the remainder, and repeat.

                        When there are no digits left, whatever remains is the remainder. To keep going
                        into decimals, put a decimal point in the answer, add zeros to the dividend and continue.

                        Move the decimal point in the divisor to the right until it is a whole number, and move the
                        decimal point in the dividend the same number of places. For example, 4.5 ÷ 0.15 becomes

    In 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2, the dividend is 17 (the number being divided), the divisor is 5, the quotient is 3 and the remainder is 2.     Some divisions never end because the same remainder keeps coming back, so the digits repeat forever — for example 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333… and 1 ÷ 7 = 0.142857142857….
