How to calculate stock profit

Invested  = shares × buy price + buy commission
Proceeds  = shares × sell price − sell commission
Profit    = proceeds + dividends − invested
Return    = profit ÷ invested × 100%

Example: buy 100 shares at $50 with a $5 commission ($5,005 invested) and sell at $65 with a $5 commission ($6,495 proceeds). The profit is $1,490, a return of 29.77%.

Annualised return

A 20% gain over six months is far better than 20% over five years. The annualised return (compound annual growth rate) puts trades of different lengths on the same footing:

Annualised return = (1 + return)365 ÷ days held − 1

Average cost and averaging down

If you buy the same stock several times at different prices, your average cost is the total amount spent divided by the total number of shares. Buying more when the price is lower (“averaging down”) lowers that average, but also puts more money into a position that is currently losing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the number of shares by the sell price, subtract the sell commission, add any dividends, and subtract what you paid (shares × buy price plus the buy commission). Divide the profit by the amount invested to get your percentage return.

It is the sell price at which you neither make nor lose money after fees: (shares × buy price + buy commission + sell commission) ÷ shares. Dividends received lower your real break-even further.

Add up the cost of every purchase (shares × price for each) and divide by the total number of shares. Use the Average cost tab above to do this for any number of purchases.

Shares needed = (target average × current shares − current total cost) ÷ (current price − target average). This only works when the current price is below your target average. The Average cost tab works this out for you.

Enter your tax rate to see the after-tax profit. Tax is applied only to a positive profit, at a single flat rate; real capital gains rules depend on your country, income and how long you held the shares.
